The 2023 Relaunch
Michigan Authors began early in the mid-1950s. It originally was initiated by high school librarian, Rachel M. Hilbert as “a project for the student library assistants at Bentley High School in Livonia [Michigan]” and published in 1960 by the Michigan Association of School Librarians. 1964 saw the publication of a supplement entitled Michigan Poets, also edited by Rachel Hilbert and a committee of School Librarians, and University Professors. As stated in the introduction of the first edition, the “purpose was to emphasize the literary heritage that {Michigan} has given its citizens.” The second edition, published in 1980, by the Michigan Association for Media in Education, enlarged the scope of the authors included, and also included both Michigan authors and poets in the same volume. In 1998, the Michigan Authors committee of MAME received numerous requests for an update of the 1993 edition. Upon investigation, the committee realized that the number of authors to be included was more than one volume could hold. After investigation of other formats for publication the committee consulted with State of Michigan Library Director, Christie Pearson Brandau, and the Directory of Michigan Center for the Book, Karren Reish. It was decided in December, 2000 that the database would be entitled Michigan Authors and Illustrators and would be a collaborative effort of the three entities. The Database is still working although some of it’s features have gone to sleep, so in 2021 it was decided that we need a new platform which was easily searchable and user friendly. We are in the process now of implementing that transfer. Links to both database platforms may be found below.
